Hereford is the county town of Herefordshire and is a cathedral city. The city is the largest settlement within the county. Hereford Cathedral dates back to 1076 and is dedicated to two saints – St. Mary the Virgin and St. Ethelbert the King.

There are five colleges in Hereford including Hereford College of Arts and the Royal National College for the Blind. There are plans in place for a new university to be established in the city.

There are many famous names that have ties to Hereford including John Kemble, Gilbert Harding, Frank Oz and Ellie Goulding, all who were born in or around the area.

The west country is famous for its cider which makes Hereford’s Cider Museum a popular sight to visit. Other popular sights include The Old House museum and the Hereford museum and Art Gallery. The Holme Lacy House is a hotel that has hosted many famous historical figures in its time.

Many rivers and brooks run through Herefordshire with the major ones being the River Wye, the River Teme and the River Lugg. There are mainly just dual carriageways in the county, with the exception of part of the M50 running along the south.

Agriculture plays an important role in the county with beef, fruit, dairy and potatoes being produce en masse. The land use is mostly farm land producing these exports. Since 2004, the county flower has been mistletoe.
