Gravesend is a town in north west Kent and is 21 miles east south-east of Central London. Tibury in Essex faces it on the other side of the Thames and the town is the administrative centre of Gravesham Borough. Endowment Mortgage

Endowment mortgages are traditionally associated with interest-only mortgages and so are only open to non-residential investors such as those looking to buy to let.

Your monthly repayments pay off the interest on the loan only with an interest-only mortgage and don't address payment of the capital. The endowment element works by you paying into an endowment fund and part of your payment is put towards life cover (if you die, the capital is paid off). The endowment fund itself is an investment fund which you invest in monthly and which is intended to grow, during the mortgage period, to become large enough on surrender at the end of the period to cover the capital.

The risk – and controversy surrounding these products – concerns the fund not growing sufficiently to cover the full capital amount such that there is a shortfall which has to be made up.
