How to get a mortgage - or remortgage - in Walsall

Walsall is an industrial town in the West Midlands situated 10 miles northwest of Birmingham, 10 miles south of Cannock and 7 miles east of Wolverhampton. Evidence for the town’s presence dates back to at least 1002 CE. The Industrial Revolution brought about a population increase from 2,000 to 86,000 over just 200 years. Since then the population has decreased, but the town continues to thrive off the developments which occurred within this period.

The town has two museums, the Walsall Museum and the Walsall Leather Museum. The former displays the history of the town whilst the latter displays the fame of the town's leather trade. There is a large Victorian park called the Walsall Arboretum that was opened in 1874 as well as the New Art Gallery Walsall; both additionally attract people to the town.

The mortgage application process has 4 stages regardless of which mortgage lender you use:

  • Approval in principal (AIP)
  • Mortgage in principal (MIP)
  • Mortgage valuation
  • Mortgage Offer

a) Is your name correct?

Fixed rate mortgage

The element of a fixed rate mortgage is the interest rate which means each month your mortgage repayments are the same. The period you can have this type of mortgage ranges from two to ten years, but once this period is over you can apply for another fixed rate mortgage.

The rate tend to be fairly high but you do have the security of knowing how much you will be paying each month. If the Bank of England base rate drops and you consider changing to a variable rate mortgage, there is a hefty charge for leaving before your time period is over.
