Writtle is a village just outside of Chelmsford. It is situated just 2 miles east of Chelmsford, 20 miles northwest of Southend-on-Sea and 39 miles northeast of London. The town is home to Writtle College which is one of the UK’s oldest and largest land-based colleges (colleges specialising in agriculture and horticulture).

The history of the village dates back to Roman times evidenced by various archaeological finds in the town. Landmarks in the village include Longmeads House, a large Victorian building, and the All Saints Church.

A large proportion of Essex's boundaries are water (the River Thames and the North Sea), the remainder includes Greater London, Hertfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Suffolk. Kent is across the River Thames to the south.
