Repayment Mortgage

If you are a residential home buyer buying with a mortgage, you will be taking out this kind of mortgage (interest-only mortgages can only be accessed by commercial buyers).

With a repayment mortgage, over the mortgage term – most often 25 years – you make monthly payments with part going towards paying off the interest on the loan and part going towards paying off the capital. As the term progresses and you pay more of the capital off, the interest element becomes smaller so more of your payment goes towards paying down the capital.

If you make all your monthly payments, you will have paid off the mortgage entirely by the end of the term and will then hold the full equity of your property yourself.
