Berwick-upon-Tweed is situated in the English county of Northumberland and is the northernmost town in England. It lies at the mouth of the River Tweed and so has beaches on the coastline of the North Sea. This market town is situated 56.3 road miles south-east of Edinburgh, and 63.0 road miles north of Newcastle upon Tyne

The town’s ownership has long been disputed, between England and Scotland, with it switching between the two throughout its history. It has been apart of England since 1482 which is when it last changed hands.

Northumberland is the most northerly county in England. The north of the county is bordered by Scotland, the west is bordered by Cumberland and the south is bordered by Durham. The east of the county is on the coastline of the North Sea. The county town is Alnwick which has a population of 8,116 (2011). Newcastle upon Tyne was a part of the county until 1400 when the city became a county itself.

There are no motorways in the county but there are major roads such as the A1, A68 and the A696. The school system in the county is the three tier system (lower/middle/upper) with many state schools contained within it.

Northumberland National Park is the furthest north national park in England. The north of the park has the Cheviot Hills and the southern part covers sections of Hadrian’s Wall. The county has been the sight of many battles including that of the Viking raid in 793 on the monks living on the Holy Island and a Scottish attack on Northumberland in 1388.
