Some parts of the county to its north east are in the industrial area of the West Midlands. Major settlements include Kidderminster, Bromsgrove and Redditch (all satellite towns of Birmingham). Adjoining counties include West Midlands, Warwickshire, Gloucestershire, Staffordshire and Shropshire.
Worcester is the largest populated urban area and contains the county's one university, the University of Worcester. It is also the main transport hub, offering direct railway services from Worcester Shrub Hill to London Paddington and many other major conurbations.

Arguably Kidderminster Harriers is the county's most famous football team – it is non-league and one of the oldest in the country – and Worcestershire County Cricket Club's (WCCC) home ground is at New Road in Worcester. WCCC last won the county championship in the late 80s in the era of Ian Botham, Graham Dilley and Graeme Hick.
The village of Broadheath, about 6 miles (10 km) North-West of the city of Worcester, is the birthplace of the composer Edward Elgar. Worcester’s Berrow’s Journal has a claim to be the oldest surviving newspaper in the world, publishing started in 1709.
