Ashton-under-Lyne is a market town just outside of Manchester. It is situated 7 miles east of the centre of Manchester, 13 miles south of Rochdale and 7 miles northeast of Stockport. The town is on the north bank of the River Tame and in the foothills of the Pennines. There is considerable evidence of Stone Age and Viking activity within the area.

The town hall is a notable building due to its Corinthian columns and it was opened in 1840. Other landmarks include the five parks, Hartshead Pike and the memorial gardens. Hartshead Pike is a stone tower on the top of a hill overlooking Ashton and Oldham. Within the memorial gardens there is the main War Memorial of the town which commemorates those who fought in the First and Second World War.
