Difficulty getting a loan from a bank? Try a Credit Union instead

Credit unions are 'not for profit' and offer low-interest loans, normally to people living or working in a particular area. APRs offered are generally lower than those of banks, saving you money on interest and therefore your repayments will be cheaper.

Family Deposit Mortgage

With family deposit mortgages, a family member places cash in a linked special savings account to help another family member secure a mortgage to buy a home and where the money in the account is held as security against the mortgage not being paid off.

The cash is held for a fixed period of time, which can be quite long (many years). The risk is that the mortgagor defaults on repayments so the helper family member's money is at risk. However, savings interest is payable on the linked account, even if at a comparatively low rate, and if the correct repayments are made, there's no other cost to the helper family member.


Hanwell is a town in London's Ealing Borough and is 1.5 miles west of Ealing. It is very residential with parades of shops here and there, particularly clustered around the Uxbridge Road/Hanwell Broadway. It has some excellent and varied pubs, such as the Fox which is just next to the Grand Union Canal, and some pleasant parks, such as Elthorne Park and Blondin Park. There is a sequence of six locks in a row regarding the canal's path through Hanwell, the only place where there are as many on the entire system!
