Widnes is an industrial town in Cheshire and was historically classed as being in Lancashire – it's on the north bank of the River Mersey. Its development from being a fairly small settlement was marked after John Hutchinson established a chemical factory in Spike Island in the later period of the Industrial Revolution and the town is still associated with chemical manufacture although much of its employment is now given over to the service sector. The industrial jobs created in its Victorian expansion were frequently filled by Polish, Irish and Lithuanian immigrant labour.

Landmarks and attractions include the Grade II listed Silver Jubilee Bridge to Runcorn, opened in 1961, Victoria Promenade at West Bank, Spike Island (now an open recreation area which leads to footpaths along the former towpath of the Sankey Canal and the Catalyst Science Discovery Centre. It is of course also particularly known for its Widnes Viking Rugby League Football Club, which has won numerous pieces of silverware, both nationally and internationally, over the years.
