Billericay has links back to the Bronze age and is located in the London Basin in Essex. Near the High Street, there is a change in soil type from sandy to clay a consequence of this is the local underground springs.

It has properties from many eras. The Burghstead Lodge in the High Street is a fine example of a building from the Georgian period. The railway arrived in 1889 and was an impetus to further development of the town.

Much of Billericay's current property was built from the early 20th century and onwards. You are more likely to find semi-detached housing and flats nearer the town centre, in the outlying areas and smaller villages, such as Burstead and Ramsden Bellhouse, there are a fair few larger detached properties, some of them original or period restorations; others are very modern and built on the site of the previous property which was knocked down.
